one two

one two happened in Beijing, China. A mother is cycling her kid around town, on one of certainly more than the bechanted 9 million bicycles in Beijing at that time.

The picture was taken back in 1984, just a few years after the end of the cultural revolution. At this time China strictly imposed its one-child policy. Under this parents often believed it would be nicer to have a boy rather than a girl which reportedly lead to some cruel consequences. Many years later the ruling Party realised the policy did no good to nothing and nobody - not to the economy and certainly not to the families. Also it severely harmed the demographics of China with all its difficult consequences decades later.

one two is a contemporary document. At this very spot we would today probably find a high-rise building to provide very limited living space for the kid on the bike and his/her own now multiple sons and daughters, maybe even grandchildren. And it's not sure he or her would still ride a bicyle in Beijing, much rather a BEV.
