thorvaldsens cut was taken in the Alte Nationalgalerie Berlin. It shows a portrait of danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, painted by Karl Joseph Begas in 1823.
thorvaldsens cut somewhat plays with connotations on geometry: the lines defining the wallspace follow rather accurately the rules of the golden cut, thus referring to the golden frame of the painting which itself follows golden cut rules. The painted protrait adds life and playfull contrast to the otherwise super-clean, dramatically empty surfaces of the museum walls. The image weight clearly leans to the left. But at second or third glance, the structured surfaces claim attention and the three basic lines cut visual momentum to the right.
